Establishing FABKA

The inaugural meeting of The Fastnet Area Beekeepers’ Association (FABKA) took place at the Teagasc Office in Skibbereen, a cold wet winter’s evening warmed by the welcome of Mairead and Mike Love the energy and vision behind this new endeavour. We were introduced to a number of special guests including Paul O’Brien the current President of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers’ Association (FIBKA) who travelled down from Galway to outline the role of the national body and what it has to offer an organisation such as ours. The Munster Director Gus McCoy from Co. Clare welcomed the interest expressed by new FABKA group and introduced Eleanor Attridge from the Cork County Beekeepers (CCBKA) who provided an informative talk on an introduction to beekeeping.

There was a good deal of local interest expressed and identifying an association apiary will be of importance. The beginners’ course starting in March for 4 weeks will lay a foundation for the new FABKA Beekeeping Group with 25 already signed up. Our next FABKA Meeting will take place on Wednesday 18th March and will be held every 3rd Wednesday of the month.
